How To Create A Zen-like Office

By 22 January 2015July 26th, 2020No Comments

We all know how stressful it can be to work in an office, you’re cooped up all day and the stresses of meetings, projects and deadlines can create a huge headache. Having a happy workforce is key to keeping your business running at its best, so creating the right kind of atmosphere inside the office can be vital. You can’t do anything to unburden staff from important meetings or deadlines but you can help to keep the office attitude in a zen place. Calm and focus will bring out the best in people and make their working day as stress-free as possible.

Take a look below to see some of our top tips for creating a Zen-like office space.

Declutter Your Space

So many offices forget the importance of clean and clear working space, allowing paperwork, files and other miscellaneous items to pile up. This is a huge distraction for workers, making them feel penned in and unable to focus their minds on one task at a time. Decluttering is the key to solving this problem; put everything you don’t need in the bin or in a filing cabinet. Ensure you have plenty of bins dotted around – with recycling specific bins for paper – and have them emptied on a regular basis. The tidier the desk, the tidier the mind.

Bring A Plant

Looking after a plant can be a therapeutic task, so encouraging desk plants could help to calm the minds of your workers. We’re not talking about large trees or anything which will obscure other peoples view, just a small plant – such as a bonsai tree – which can be kept on the desk with minimal fuss and minimal mess.

If your team aren’t keen on plants then perhaps you could encourage them to bring in a photo of a loved one for the their desk or a mascot such as a toy or desk decoration. This simple touch will hopefully keep their spirits up and make the space feel more like their own.

Provide Plenty Of Water

Despite the endless amounts of tea and coffee you might see being consumed in your office, the most important thing for your team to drink is water. Water is refreshing and hydrating, with studies showing that those who stay hydrated are far more likely to stay focused and energised throughout the day. For this reason you should ensure fresh, clean water is always on hand, either through a water cooler or on tap so that staff can fill a jug to share.

Clean Floors & Walls

While a zen rock garden has sand to be raked, you no doubt have carpets and regular flooring. The principle is still the same however, keep the floors and walls clean and tidy and it will help to send a positive image to everyone in your office. The more tired and dirty your surroundings become, the more frantic and tired the mind becomes.
