How To Keep Your Classroom Organised

By 24 March 2015July 26th, 2020No Comments

Keeping a classroom tidy and organised is a huge task, but for the smooth running of your schedule, and for the sake of your sanity, it’s an important thing to get right. The children in your classroom could be the most angelic pupils, but you can guarantee that by the end of the day there will be disarray and mess in your classroom.

To help you in the battle to keep an organised teaching area, we’ve taken a look at some of the best ways you can organise your classroom and the different aspects which you should be looking after.

Keep Your Desk Organised

Your own desk is the epicentre of your day, you’ll spend a lot of your time either at your desk working, or going back and forth to help students. For this reason you need to have some sort of organisation going on. While a completely empty desk isn’t helpful you can keep things in their right place. Make space for looking through papers and have your drawers set out to keep items separated but close to hand. Your example could soon catch on with your pupils.

Get Yourself Some Bins

There are so many things a classroom needs which can be easily turned into a mess. Pens, pencils, craft supplies and paper all need to be kept in clearly labelled bins. Rather than throwing random things into random drawers and having to sort this headache out at the end of the day, you can teach your pupils to use the appropriate bins or trays for particular items. This should end the maddening search for relevant supplies when taking on different tasks.

Make Use Of Shelving

If you have shelving up around your classroom already then great, if you don’t, then consider whether you could request to have some put up. Shelving is a great way to keep things on display without having them clutter up your everyday space. Whether it’s books or student projects which you want to keep up on the shelves, you keep the importance and relevance of them but don’t end up tripping over them.

Create A Classroom Routine

To really get to grips with the way your classroom looks you should be thinking about a routine. This routine is mostly for your benefit, you know where things should be and you know when the best times to tidy are. If you feel like getting your pupils involved to take on some of the responsibility for tidying up after themselves then have a rotation system where you nominate helpers. When the classroom works together to keep a tidy and organised space you can all see the benefits.
