How To Keep Your Office Desk Tidy And Why

By 26 November 2014July 26th, 2020No Comments

We may not ever notice it, but our office desks get increasingly more cluttered as we go along. Whether it’s piles of additional work, or extra trinkets you’ve brought from home, your office desk is not something you often give much thought to once you’re away from it.

Stop and look at your office desk now. Is it free from clutter? How does it make you feel? Most people find that when they have a cluttered desk that they can’t work as efficiently. This is where the old idiom “a tidy desk is a tidy mind” comes from. With a cleaner, crisper place in which to do your work, you’re less likely to become distracted and you can channel your focus to increase your productivity.

Clearly this is something which companies could benefit from, with workers more efficient at their desks than ever. With this in mind, here are some ways in which you can keep your desk tidy.

  • Clear Away Your Rubbish

Rubbish accumulates quicker than you’d think, the odd wrapper here, a crumpled noted there. It all adds up until there is no discernable desk space left to work on. Grab the nearest bin and chuck away all the things you don’t need, if you’re ruthless enough at this stage you’ll make everything else in the process much easier – just don’t let your mind trick you into thinking you need that old leaflet on your desk.

  • Shelving & Cabinets

While there is plenty to throw away, there will doubtless be documents which you’ll need to keep handy. A lot of this paperwork can be kept away from your desk though, since you don’t need everything out at once. If you invest in cabinets and shelving you can file things away with great ease and access them whenever you need to. By doing this you allow yourself to focus on only the task at hand, removing the temptation for your brain to juggle several projects at once.

  • Organise Remaining Clutter

If you’ve followed the first two steps in this process then step three should be a doddle. What you should now be left with is clutter and stationery – pens, notepads, calculator, ruler etc. Get yourself a pot for all your pens and highlighters and store any excess notepads and paper in a drawer. If you need little pots to put pins, paperclips and staples in then do so; you’ll thank yourself for organising yourself this way when you desperately need a paperclip for the project paperwork which is due for submission.

  • Keep Only What You Need

This final point can be applied throughout this process but you need to reign yourself in and only keep what you really need for your day-to-day work. When you have only the things you need you can focus on your task and become more efficient, making your day a whole lot less stressful.
