How To Look After The Wood Floors In Your Building

By 15 June 2015July 26th, 2020No Comments

Wooden floors are back in fashion, whether it’s a simple laminate flooring or a special hardwood floor, lots of office spaces and commercial environments are taking advantage of this durable yet elegant looking flooring solution.

What you don’t want however, is for this surface to become worn down or tired looking. Your floors add to the first impression your guests and clients will have when they enter your premises, plus, looking after these floors can also show your staff that you are serious about maintaining high standards for their work space.

So what can you do to help keep your wooden floors in tip top condition? This month we have several suggestions.

Furniture Feet Covers

The biggest problem you’ll have in an office with a wooden floor is the damage done by furniture, even if you don’t intend for certain pieces to move you can be sure that even if someone accidentally nudges it there will be a mark left behind. These nasty scuffs will be hard to hide, especially if the mark is of a different colour to the floor, they’re hard to remove and you can’t cover them up if there are lots of them.

Get some pads for the feet of your furniture and you’ll be spared the headache of furniture scuffing. In the same vein, don’t allow any roller items on these surfaces as they can also cause marks.

Clean Liquids Up Quickly

Liquids can sit on your hardwood flooring and are easy to blot up with a cloth than on carpets, but if that liquid seeps between the joints where the wood flooring sits it can cause more long lasting damage, eventually warping and distorting the wood. The sooner you react in this respect the more confident you can be that it hasn’t soaked in.

Liquids such as coffee, juice and water should all be carried carefully over a wooden floor and not consumed whilst stood on it. It might seem like an extreme measure but it will help to prevent accidental spillages.

No Chemical Cleaning

Tempting though it might be, don’t use any chemical cleaners on your wooden flooring. As mentioned before, you can clean up spillages quickly and cleaning with a cloth. Using any kind of chemical cleaner yourself will almost always end up with the wood reacting in a bad way. This could see your floors bleached, warped or marked in an unusual way.

The best thing to do, if you want well maintained floors, is to leave the cleaning process to the professionals.

Have A Regular Cleaning Schedule

With the above point in mind, you should create a cleaning schedule which you agree with your cleaners. Simply having a member of your team mop or steam a wooden floor is bound to end badly. Unless they are trained professionals with experience there is a good chance that they will eventually damage your floor.

The one thing you can do to help your cleaners is to sweep the floors several times a week to make the cleaning process easier for the professionals.
